POLICE in Mwense have arrested eight people, who include two Tanzanians, for alleged possession of illegally logged mukula timber, Luapula Province deputy commissioner of police Webby Shula has said.
Mr Shula said in an interview on Saturday that the six suspects were apprehended last Wednesday near Musonda Falls.
He said the suspects were found loading the timber onto a Scania truck, registration number T314BZD.
“Another motor vehicle, a Land Rover, was also found at the scene where the loading was being done,” Mr Shula said.
He said suspects, whose names he withheld, have been jointly charged with unlawful possession and trading of biological resources, contrary to Section (b) of the Environmental Management Act number 12 of 2011.
“The two vehicles have been impounded and are currently parked at the police station,” Mr Shula said.
