74 Zambian fishermen who were held captive by Congolese soldiers have been released by their captors.

Northern Province deputy police commissioner Alfred Nawa who disclosed this to ZANIS said 16 are still being held captive.

 

Mr Nawa said 128 fishermen were rounded up by the Congolese soldiers on Lake Tanganyika on Tuesday after being accused of illegally fishing in Congolese waters.

 

They were taken to Mulilo area in the DRC where they were detained.

 

Mr Nawa said the released fishermen are currently in Nsumbu.

 

He said the Zambian government has since engaged their counterparts in the DRC to negotiate for the release of the remaining fishermen.

And in another development Police in Kasama have confiscated seven x 50 kilograms bags of illicit alcohol commonly known as Tujili-jili.

 

Police said the bags of Tujili-jili were confiscated from three individuals who have since been arrested to help with investigations.

 

The trio, Golfied Mulenga, 21, Kennedy Kampamba, 20 and Lazarous Sinkala will appear in court soon.

 

Police have since warned members of the public to desist from dealing in the banned illicit alcohol.
