Police in Kasama have arrested a 20-year-old woman for child stealing.

Northern Province Police Commissioner, Mary Chikwanda, confirmed the development to ZANIS today and named the culprit as Melody Mwamba of Mwalushi village in Chief Nkole Mfumu’s area in Kasama district.

The circumstances of the offence are that, on January 29, 2014, between 07:00 hours and 17;00 hours, the mother of the two-week-old baby girl, Norah Bwalya, left her in company of another juvenile to draw water from a nearby well.

On her return, she found the baby missing and her relative, Ester Bwalya, informed her that she suspected Melody Mwamba as she was seen coming to the house and a search was conducted and the suspect was apprehended and found with the baby.

Ms Chikwanda said the victim has since been charged with child stealing and will appear in court soon and is remanded at Kasama Central Police.
