A 42 – year-old man of Chief Chanje’s area in Chipata district of Eastern Province died on the spot after being hit by a motor vehicle.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Grace Chipalila confirmed the incidence to ZANIS in an interview saying Capthias Kamanga died over the weekend after being hit by a Toyota Hilux registration number ALF 3322.

Mrs Chipalila said the accident occurred at Chanje junction along Chipata-Lundazi road.

She stated that Patrick Kamanga, 41 years of house number G 84 of Kapata township while driving the vehicle hit the deceased who was running as he tried to cross the road.

The Police Commissioner said that Kamanga failed to stop when he saw the deceased cross as he was over speeding.

She confirmed that the driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving which is contrary to Section 161 of the Road traffic Act number 11 of 2002 of the Laws of Zambia.

And Mrs Chipalila has appealed to motorists in the province to respect other road users like pedestrians to avoid causing accidents.

She observed that increase in the number of road accident was because people were not observing road traffic regulations.

“I have also observed that pedestrians sit along the road sides, I want to warn them that if found they will face the wrath of the law as they have also contributed to the increase of road accidents.

Mrs Chipalila has however called on road users to abide by traffic rules if the province was to remain a free accident zone.
