THE Norwegian national team arrived in the country yesterday ahead of today’s international friendly against Zambia with coach Egil Olsen promising to give the African champions a good run.

Olsen said his locally-based outfit will give Zambia a good practice match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Olsen is without his foreign-based players but has faith in the local players.
Norway beat Bafana Bafana, the 2013 Africa Cup hosts, on Tuesday in Cape Town in their first of the two-match tour of Africa.
Captain Tarik Elyounoussi struck for the speedy Norwegians just before the break for the only goal of the match.
“We are here to just play football, as you are aware, we are off season in Norway but the players are fully involved and we will play good football,” Olsen, nicknamed Drillo, said.
“The most important for us is to try out new players who have never played for the national team. The performance is most important than the result.”
And Football Association of Zambia president Kalusha Bwalya says today’s international friendly will give Zambia a good send-off to the 2013 Africa Cup finals tournament scheduled to kick off next Saturday.
He said all the international friendly matches Zambia have played are very important in shaping the team for the forthcoming tournament.
Meanwhile, the Zambia national soccer team arrived in Ndola last evening.
Coach Herve Renard did not speak to journalists saying he will do so today after the match.
Over 50 fans welcomed the team and Renard took time to sign autographs.

Chellah takes on Chipimo

George Chellah

STATE House has challenged opposition politician Elias Chipimo to “bluntly tell the nation if he desires a situation where politicians get away with crimes and corruption all in the name of tolerance of divergent views.”

President Sata’s special assistant for press and public relations George Chellah says Mr Chipimo should “wake up” to reality and take development and governance issues seriously.
In a terse statement issued yesterday, Mr Chellah challenged the National Restoration Party (NAREP) president to substantiate claims that the government is under performing.
On Thursday, Mr Chipimo accused the PF government of seeking political domination and approaching development haphazardly.
But Mr Chellah said Mr Chipimo’s shots at the PF government are not only wild but in total disregard of basic realities on the ground.
“Furthermore, he must pin-point where the PF Government has failed and provide alternative grounded options rather than spend time day-dreaming or theoretical sessions about what he wishes to happen,” Mr Chellah said.
He said Mr Chipimo’s failure to appreciate the practical and fundamental realities of governance will constantly make him appear as if he is occupying a parallel universe.
Mr Chellah said Government recognises the importance of the opposition but that they lack civility and sincerity when engaging Government on various issues.
“Let them realise that there is always a creative, truthful and moderate side to every argument no matter the scale of the subject,” Mr Chellah said.
“Lies, deceit, incitement and wayward utterances can only excite the media without providing concrete solutions to the needs of our people,” he said.
Mr Chellah advised the opposition to invest in sober and resourceful forms of engagement with government and that the PF administration is ready to dialogue with all well-meaning Zambians on matters of national importance.
“Let them [opposition] project themselves as real and mature alternatives in the governance of the country,” Mr Chellah said.
And Open Society Foundation executive director Sunday Chanda has advised politicians appearing before the courts not to tie their prosecutions to politics.
Mr Chanda also said it is wrong to blame the prosecutions on President Sata because “he was not there when the alleged offences were committed”.
“The accused must understand that investigative wings have nothing to do with any politics of the past or the future except to rid the nation of economic and financial crimes,” he said.
He advised the opposition leaders insinuating that the arrests of MMD president Nevers Mumba and former Minister of Information Ronnie Shikapwasha are politically-motivated to calm down.
“It could only have become political if the offences alleged to have been committed by the duo in their respective capacities were not punishable by law. This is not time to cry politics.
“There is no law that insulates politicians from arrests if a prima facie case exists. The arrests have not been made at the height of electoral campaigns where it can be suspected to be politically-motivated. The fight against corruption is not a respecter of person and this is in line with the rule of law that subjects all citizens before it,” Mr Chanda said.
He said this is not the first time politicians have been arrested.
Mr Chanda said when Dr Mumba served as republican vice-president and Lieutenant-General Shikapwasha was a senior Government official, late President Frederick Chiluba was appearing in court on corruption charges and neither Dr Mumba nor Gen Shikapwasha called the prosecution politically-motivated.
“When President Michael Sata was in the opposition, he was arrested and incarcerated on several occasions; neither Dr Mumba nor Hon Shikapwasha raised their voices to condemn arrests as being politically-motivated. So, what has become political about the duo’s arrests? There is no need to create political jamborees out of these arrests because they are not unprecedented,” Mr Chanda said.

The Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) Ndola District Secretariat says it fully supports party President Nevers Mumba because he was duly elected.

Speaking at the party headquarters in Ndola today, District Chairman Bruno Mukare said MMD Ndola district members will not allow anyone to destroy the party.

Mr Mukare said those members that want to bring confusion in the party should leave.

He added that Ndola district was not in support of party members that are passing a vote of no confidence in Dr Mumba.

“We as Ndola district secretariat are ready to fight those that want to bring confusion in the party,” he said.

Copperbelt PF discredits Mulongoti

Mike Mulongoti

The Patriotic Front on the Copperbelt says Zambians should stop paying attention to former Minister of Works and Supply Mike Mulongoti alleging that he is not a discredit figure who only participates in the political affairs of the country to serve his selfish interest.

In statement to ZANIS in Lusaka today, PF Copperbelt Youth Secretary Chanda Kabwe said Mr Mulongoti is a spent force who will never find credible space in the Zambian political landscape because he participated in bringing the country to its knees under the MMD rule.

Mr Kabwe added that Mr Mulongoti presided over the Ministry of Works and Supply when corruption was at its peak in the country.

He stated that Mr Mulongoti joined the PF campaign after he was left politically stranded when he was expelled from the MMD and did not hesitate to use his association with the PF for his survival by feeding on the party’s unsuspecting well-wishers.

Mr Kabwe further said that Mr Mulongoti is a political scavenger whose sole purpose of being in politics is for personal benefit and does not care about the common good of the country.

He added that Mr Mulongoti lacks sufficient credibility to command a following among Zambians and his political career is as good as over to the extent that no amount of “lumpen” antics will revive his depleted relevance on the political scene.

However, efforts to get a comment from Mr Mulongoti proved futile by press time as his mobile was not reachable.

Dr. Joseph Katema MP

Minister of Community Development, Mother and Child Health Joseph Katema says the Patriotic Front government is determined to deliver on its campaign promises to the people of Zambia through a committed and vibrant civil service.

Dr Katema said the PF government has realigned the ministry of community development to include mother and child health in order to improve service delivery at community level.

He said many health challenges that health centers were dealing with should be better addressed at community level and the PF government wants the district medical offices to be integrated into the ministry of community development for the provision of a holistic service at community level.

He said the officers in his ministry should work with health officers at community level because many primary health care issues that health centers were grappling with would be lessened if the clinics and health centres were integrated into the ministry of community development.

Dr Katema added that malarial, diarrhoea and cholera epidemics were not occurring at health centres but in the community where sensitization of better practices of hygiene, the proper use of mosquito nets and boiling of drinking water should be done.

He said the policy shift and the realigning of the ministry of community development will lessen the occurrences of diseases that would be dealt with at community level.

He said the ministry of health will remain at district hospital level to deal with referrals of complicated cases which will also reduce on referrals abroad.

He disclosed this during a meeting which included ministry of health, community development and social welfare officers at the Luapula provincial administration conference room today.

And Luapula province Assistant Secretary Peter Chilambwe said civil servants were agents of change and development and urged civil servants to remain committed in taking services closer to the people.

Mr Chilambwe said it was through commitment that civil servants could improve the living standards of the people in the province.

He said the realignment of the ministry of community development could reduce incidences of maternal and infant mortality in the province.

Mr Chilambwe has appealed for efficiency and effectiveness by the civil service in the delivery of service to the people at community level.

And Acting Community Development Provincial Officer Lawrence Kaonga appealed for de-linkage of his department from receiving funds through the provincial Accounting Unit because of the difficulties in accessing the funds.

Mr Kaonga said he was finding difficulties in implementing his programmes under his department because funds were not easy to access through the provincial  Accounting Unit.

Defence Minister Geofrey Mwamba says the Zambia National Service (ZNS) Youth skills training programme will extend to all the ten provincial capitals of the country.

Mr Mwamba said this was with a view to capture many vulnerable youths to be imparted with life sustaining skills.

Speaking at the official opening of intake 04/2012 of 349 youth training  programme at Chiwoko ZNS training camp in Chipata district this morning, Mr Mwamba noted that government understands that matters of youths were crucial to any nation and any country which did not attend to the needs of the youth was on a path of self destruction as the future of the country depended on the youth.

He advised the instructors to execute their duties professionally and pay attention to the sensitive nature of the youths saying there was need to handle the trainees with care as they were delicate and vulnerable.

He appealed to the trainees to take advantage of the training opportunity as it was a starting point to better their lives.

Mr Mwamba also advised the trainees to be disciplined and follow instructions saying rules and regulations were a guiding principle of any society.

Meanwhile, ZNS Deputy Commandant Alick Kamiji said there was need for additional infrastructure of two dormitories to accommodate an increase of youth trainees to 500 per intake at the training centre.

Brigadier General Kamiji said the training camp also required the construction of additional classrooms and a library and adequate provision of training tools for all the courses as the centre did not have adequate tools for the courses.

He reiterated ZNS’s commitment to supporting and fulfilling governments desire of training vulnerable youths into responsible and productive citizens in order for the country to be secured as youths were future leaders.

The Deputy Commandant disclosed that the centre had initially received 350 male youths out of which one was discharged due to gross indiscipline and excessive beer drinking leaving the number to 349.

Earlier, ZNS Chiwoko Commanding officer Kaputa Mukanda said the 18 months training program would include automotive, carpentry and joinery, bricklaying and plastering, plumbing and sheet metal as well as general agriculture.

Major Mukanda said among the trainees were 277 grade twelve school leavers, seven have never been to school and 27 grade eight to nine pupils.

Others were 19 grade seven drop-outs and 19 grade ten to twelve drop-outs.

He also revealed that the youths that were undergoing the training which started in December last were had an average age of 28 and that the oldest was 36 years while the youngest was 17 years old.

Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge has assured Cichetekelo Hospice staff in Ndola that government will ensure the facility stays open as government is in a hurry to improve health delivery services.

Mr Musenge said government will not sit back and allow an institution as important as the hospice to shut down due to lack of funds.

Mr Musenge was speaking during a familiarisation tour of the hospice in Ndola’s Lubuto Township today.

“We are aware of the importance of the services provided at this institution, therefore government will ensure that the hospice is not closed,” he said.

Mr Musenge added that closing the hospice will be a disadvantage to patients who rely on it for health care.

Meanwhile, Mr Musenge has congratulated all the members of staff at Cichetekelo hospice for a commendable job of maintaining the health institution for all the years it had been running.

Cichetekelo Hospice which was opened in September 1999 faces closure due to lack of funds to keep the facility running.
