Luanshya councils warns contractors against shoddy works

Luanshya Mayor, Gordon Siwale, has warned that his council will not tolerate substandard works which some contractors are exhibiting in some works awarded to them through ward development funds.

Issuing a warning during the full council meeting held in the council chamber, Mayor Siwale said most councillors had raised concerns over the shoddy works being done in some wards in Luanshya.

 

He noted that such contractors will not be given other contracts because of the minimum standards they were exhibiting in the projects.

 

During the meeting, Town Clerk, Moses Mwewa, revealed that his council had allocated sufficient funds to improve on street lighting in Luanshya and also some ward development projects in the once-giant mining town.

 

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Roan Constituency, Chishimba Kambwili, complained in the full council meeting that he has not been receiving full council notices in relation to meetings and other correspondence.

 

Mr Kambwili, who came late, sounded his displeasure just after being recognized by Mayor Siwale who chaired the meeting.

 

Luanshya Town Clerk, Moses Mwewa apologized on behalf of the local authority and indicated that his office will ensure that notices for full council meetings will be delivered to the constituency offices.

 

Earlier, Luanshya Central Member of Parliament, Steve Chungu, advised the meeting not to rush in the implementation of major projects in the city without consulting stakeholders.

 

And Luanshya residents walked to the Civic Centre to have a look at council operations during the launch of the Luanshya Municipal Council Local Government Week activities which were being conducted on open air stands at the council premises.

 

One resident, Dorothy Mwenya, told ZANIS that she does not understand the operations of the council and indicated that she was not aware of the local government week.

 

Speaking after a conducted tour Luanshya Mayor, Gordon Siwale, emphasized that there is need to create a good relationship with the residents in order for them to fully understand the operations of the local authority.

 

Most council workers who manned the open air stands complained over the slow implementation of programs because of delays in the release of funds for the planned programs and projects.
