—-Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Youming Yang says the long standing relations between Zambia and China should take a more practical approach.
Mr Yang said although China offered moral support during Zambia’s struggle for independence against colonialists, the two countries should explore other areas of cooperation in order to consolidate relations.
The Chinese Ambassador was speaking in Lusaka during his familiarization visit to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) Headquarters offices at the Mass Media Complex today.
“China gave Zambia a lot of support when you were fighting the colonialists, but the new period of cooperation should be more practical,” he said.
Mr Yang also commended first Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda, for his role in Zambia’s attainment of independence from British rule.
“Dr Kaunda is not only the founding father of your country but he is also the founder of the good relations between Zambia and China,” he said.
He revealed that the Chinese Embassy in Lusaka has lined up a series of activities to celebrate Zambia’s Golden Jubilee.
Mr Yang said the activities are meant to demonstrate the good long-standing relations between Zambia and China.
The Chinese Ambassador further said there is need to look at possibilities of building capacity for Zambian reporters through training opportunities in China.
Mr Yang said China is a huge source of information that can serve as a good training ground for ZANIS reporters.
And ZANIS Director, Patrick Lungu, said there is need to build capacity in ZANIS staff, especially those serving in districts, through training.
Mr Lungu said ZANIS plays an important role of providing information which is vital in people’s participation in the country’s governance.
He disclosed that the department is facing challenges to effectively equip its offices dotted around the country.
