Zambian President Edgar Lungu has pardoned 544 inmates, in commemoration of the Africa Freedom Day on Wednesday

Among those pardoned are 40 Ethiopian juveniles.

President Lungu pardoned the inmates, in accordance with powers vested in him under Article 59 of the constitution of Zambia.

Minister of Home Affairs Davis Mwila says President Lungu’s gesture has contributed to decongesting incarceration facilities in the country.

He also added that the inclusion of the 40 Ethiopian juveniles is of great significance, as it resolves the dilemma of having young people in adult prisons.
