POLICE in Lusaka have re-arrested Lusaka resident Emmanuel Chilekwa after slapping him with fresh charges of allegedly obtaining pecuniary advantage and obtaining money by false pretences using the President’s name.

Chilekwa, a journalist, is not new to controversy, He has crafted a niche of dealing and surviving off political drama.

Lusaka Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga said confirmed that Chilekwa was arrested on Wednesday and is charged with six counts of obtaining money by false pretences amounting to over K4,000 and one count of obtaining pecuniary advantage by lodging at Chainama Hotel where he incurred a bill of K12,500.

 

“He allegedly obtained money between December 1 last year and January 20 this year from six different people, saying that the money was to be used for Mr Lungu’s campaign.

Katanga said Chilekwa was scheduled to appear in court yesterday and urged those conned to report their cases to police. Last month, police arrested Mr Chilekwa for allegedly obtaining K105,000 by false presences.

Chilekwa was once a managing editor for the defunct People Newspaper which was funded by the late defence minister Ben Y. Mwila. Chilekwa had controversially published an article suggesting late President Levy Mwanawasa had brain damaged.

He was arrested for the publication of the Mwanawasa brain damage article which had sources from Chainama Hospital. He later struck a deal with Mwanawasa by disclosing sources of the article he published in The People.

Chilekwa is reported to have parted away with huge sums of money for allegedly “selling out” his sources. He later re-appared on the public scene with some connections to late President Michael Sata’s Patriotic Front activities.
