A TAXI driver of Kitwe has been beaten to death after he attempted to rescue a woman who was being beaten by her boyfriend.
John Chisale, 24, of 3207 Chimwemwe Township died after sustaining injuries when he was beaten using fists and an iron bar by two men when he tried to stop one of them from beating his girlfriend.
The deceased’s mother, Jane Kapala narrated at the funeral house that on Saturday, the family was disturbed by noise from the neighbours’ house when a woman identified as Grace started screaming during a fight with her boyfriend.
It is believed that Grace’s boyfriend is a tenant at her house.
Ms Kapala said the fight continued into the following day and between 19:00 and 20 :00 hours on Sunday, her son John decided to go and stop the fight.
“The couple started fighting on Saturday into Sunday and between 19:00 and 20:00 hours, my son decided to go and help fearing that the woman might be killed, but they descended on him and started beating him until he became unconscious,” she said.
Ms Kapala, who was not home at the time of the incident, was called by her other children informing her and her sister to go and check what was happening.
They sister found John in unconscious state and bleeding.
John was rushed to Kitwe Central Hospital (KCH) after obtaining a medical report from Mindolo police station. He died on Monday around 09:00 hours.
After the incident, residents started throwing stones at Grace’s house shattering windows while others partially burnt the house in the early hours of yesterday.
Ms Kapala expressed disappointment at the manner police officers have handled the case and alleged that the officers advised the other two men who did not sustain any injury to also obtain medical reports.
She said the family was not aware of the whereabouts of Grace and the two men as they have not gone back to their house after the incident.
John’s burial waits a postmortem report.
