The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has recorded a reduction in the number of traffic accidents during the 2015 new year period.
RTSA Information Officer Frederick Mubanga said the country has recorded a decrease in the number of road traffic accidents from 158 in last year’s New Year period to 80 in a similar period this year.
Mr Mubanga said the figure indicated a 50.4 percent decrease in accident occurrences for the 2015 new year period compared to last year.
In a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr Mubanga further said that the country has recorded a reduction of about 46.3 percent in the number of fatalities compared to the same period last year.
He disclosed that last year 17 people lost their lives during this period while 11 lives were lost between 06:00 hours on December 31 last year and 06:00 hours on January,2,2015.
Mr. Mubanga said during the Christmas period, the country equally recorded a reduction in the number of road accidents by 40 percent from 166 in 2013 to 99 in 2014.
He said the rapid decline would not have been possible without the intensified highway patrols and high adherence to traffic regulations by road users which are as a result of increased education and publicity of road safety campaigns by the agency and the Zambia police traffic section.
Mr. Mubanga said the reduction in the number of road traffic accidents has given RTSA the motivation to work even harder to further reduce the number of road traffic accidents in the country.
He said the Agency considers 2015 as a turning point to re-focus its energies and resources towards eliminating all inappropriate and risky behaviour on public roads.
