200 Mambwe crop fields destroyed

OVER 200 crop fields in Mambwe District in Eastern Province have been destroyed by heavy rain.
Mambwe District Commissioner Janet Palukani said yesterday that 234 crop fields had been destroyed following a heavy downpour which was experienced in the district.
Ms Palukani said 150 fields in Chief Msoro’s area, 49 fields in Chief Jumbe’s area and 35 crop fields in Chief Nsefu’s area were all destroyed by the rain.
She said a report on the impact of the rain in Kakumbi area had not yet been submitted to her office.
Ms Palukani, however, said that the few reports that had been received would be submitted to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit.
She said her office had already applied for 20,000×50 kilogramme bags of maize to help mitigate the hunger problem in the area.
“My office has already applied relief food from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit so as to mitigate the hunger in Mambwe District,” she said.
