he United States government has expressed disappointment by the decision of the Zambian government to appeal against the acquittal of rights activist Paul Kasonkomona over charges of soliciting for immoral purpose.

US embassy Charge de affaires David Young points out that in his ruling, Magistrate Lameck Ng’ambi issued an eloquent statement about the importance of free speech in a democracy and the guarantee of fundamental rights in the constitution.

Mr. Young says it is for reason that the US government urges the Zambian government to drop its appeal against the acquittal of Kasonkomona as freedom of speech is a fundamental right to be requested and embraced.

Mr. Young was speaking in Lusaka on Thursday when he held a roundtable discussion at the US embassy with journalists on the US government’s 2013 Human Rights report on Zambia.
