FIVE gunmen have stolen K10,000 cash from Liteta District Hospital in Chibombo after duping a security guard into believing that they had taken a patient for medical tests.

Police have since launched a search for the five who staged the robbery in the early hours of Friday after tying the guard’s hands and legs, and dumped him behind a ward.

The bandits gagged the guard to stop him from alerting other people.

Central Province Commissioner of Police Standwell Lungu, who confirmed this to the Times, said the robbery took place around 02:00 hours on Friday.

The criminals entered the hospital premises pretending to have taken a patient but later produced a firearm.

They ordered the security guard who was manning the hospital on the Great North Road to show them the cashier’s office.

Mr Lungu said the guard managed to elude the gunmen and ran to a house within the hospital compound to seek refuge, but they pursued and dragged him back to the hospital.

The guard later showed the criminals the cashier’s office where they hauled a deposit box containing K10,000. After getting the box containing the money, the criminals tied the guard before they fled in an unregistered Toyota Corolla.
