—The Zambia Disability HIV/AIDS Human Rights Programme (ZAMDHARP) has commended the media for their positive and effective reporting on issues concerning persons living with disabilities.

Programme Director, Elijah Ngwale, told ZANIS in a telephone interview in Lusaka today that the reports have enlightened the people living with disabilities and the general public about various issues of disabilities.

Mr Ngwale alleged that it is because of effective and consistent reporting about the disabled by the media that the Patriotic Front (PF) government last year enacted the disability law called Persons Living with Disability Act No.6 of 2012.

He noted that the PF Government domesticated the convention on the rights of persons living with disability to be looking at the rights of the disabled.

Mr Ngwale, however, called on the media fraternity to introduce a special award during next year’s commemoration of World Press Freedom Day to be awarded to personalities who reports more on persons living with disabilities.
