-The Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWZ) has called on government to consider giving civil servants in Choma and Muchinga province affordable and reasonable housing loans.

CSAWZ Secretary General Joy Beene said the housing loans will enable civil servants construct houses.

He observed that the current situation in Choma and Muchinga demands that more houses are constructed in a bid to accommodate civil servants working in the named towns.

Mr Beene explained to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in an interview today that the housing units in Choma and Muchinga were not adequate to accommodate the civil servants.

He disclosed that some civil servants in Muchinga have been squatting in guest houses for over eight months due to lack of accommodation.

Mr Beene lamented that most of the civil servants are not willing to get loans form lending institutions cause of the exorbitant interest rates that are charged.

CSAWZ Secretary General insisted that government should provide civil servants with decent low interest rate housing loans as this will cushion the housing problems being face by some servants.

Meanwhile Mr Beene has praised Southern Province Minister Josephine Limata for appealing to the Ministry Finance and National planning to give Choma civil servants housing loans.

He said the union fully supports Ms Limata’s calls for the Ministry of Finance and National Planning to give civil servants housing loans in Choma.
