Lusaka, March 4, ZANIS —- Government will this year commence the construction of over 7,500 houses for teachers across the country.

Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education Spokesperson Hillary Chipango said the construction of the houses will address the accommodation challenges that teachers are facing.

Mr. Chipango disclosed this in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.

He said that 24 houses would be built at each of the 118 secondary schools selected for the programme bringing the total number of institutional houses to 2,832.

Mr Chipango said that the upgrading of 220 basic schools across the country will necessitate the construction of 440 houses per province which will bring the number of houses for all the ten provinces to 4,440 houses.

He said government would build 60 houses for early childhood teachers and 200 houses for primary school teachers across the country following the introduction of early childhood teaching.

Meanwhile Mr. Chipango said government has pledged to address the issue of teacher pupil ratio by recruiting more teachers.
