-The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ)
has declared the just ended Presidential Elections which elected Edgar
Lungu as 6th Republican President as free and fair.

And LAZ has applauded the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for
conducting the elections in an exemplary manner and adhering to
international best practices of conducting democratic elections.

LAZ President George Chisanga said in a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today that the ECZ displayed professionalism in the management of the elections.

He hailed procedure of counting and publication of results in polling stations and commended the suspension of announcements of results to allow voters in 51 polling stations to cast their votes without any due influence.

Mr Chisanga has however expressed concern over the voter apathy which
characterized the elections and urged ECZ to sensitise voters on the
importance of exercising their right to vote.

He disclosed that LAZ deployed a total of 61 monitors in Lusaka, Southern and Copperbelt provinces to observe the elections.

Mr Chisanga said the monitors reported that there was no interference with the voting process at the polling stations except for female voters who were turned away for having nail polish and artificial nails.

He further disclosed that the monitors reported violence between the Patriotic Front and United Party for National Development.

Zambia held presidential elections on January 20, 2015 and elected Edgar Lungu President following the demise of late President Michael Sata on October 28, 2014.
