26 year old man jailed for vandalising Zesco cables

 

Lusaka, January 16th ZANIS–The Kitwe High Court has sentenced a 26 year old man of Kitwe to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for vandalising a ZESCO ground mounted transformer substation.

 

 

Judge Sichinga of the Kitwe High court sentenced John Chileshe of House Number 587 Twatasha compound in Kitwe.

 

This was after he drained 34 litres of transformer oil valued at K1, 023.25 from the ZESCO ground mounted transformer substation number 04 in Chachacha Township.

 

 

Judge Sichinga sentenced Chileshe to Kamfinsa prison to serve 10 years of imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilt of the offence.

 

 

ZANIS reports that ZESCO Spokesperson Henry Kapata who confirmed the development in an interview in Lusaka,  today.

 

He said this is the first case in the year 2015.

 

 

And Mr. Kapata has revealed that a total of 27 people were last year convicted of illegal ZESCO connection cases in various parts of the country.

 

 

He charged that vandalism is a serious offence in Zambia and carries a minimum of 10 years imprisonment and a maximum of twenty five years imprisonment.

 

 

Mr. has since warned members of the public to desist from engaging in the vandalism of ZESCO equipment saying the law will take its course on anyone found wanting.
