—Chieftainess Waitwika of the Namwanga people in Nakonde district in Muchinga Province has appealed to people of Ikomba village to dig pit latrines and stop answering the call of nature in the bush.

Chieftainess made the appeal yesterday when she visited Ikomba village together with World Vision Zambia to sensitize her subjects on various issues of sanitation and others.

The traditional leader warned the people of Ikomba that government will soon start carrying out inspections to ensure that each household digs a pit latrine.

She directed them to stop the olden ways of answering the call of nature in the bush as it is unhygienic.

Chieftainess Waitwika lamented that those practices of answering the call of nature in the bush lead to diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases among others.

She also called on her subjects to develop a hygiene practice of always washing their hands after using the toilet.

The Chieftainess also advised her subjects to dig their pit latrines away from the water wells as this would contaminate their drinking water.

She, however, thanked the people of Ikomba village for turning up in large numbers to attend the sensitisation meeting.
