Elderly woman pleads guilty to trafficking in marijuana

An old woman of Shibuyunji area has pleaded guilty to a charge trafficking in 12.4 grams of marijuana.

Elizabeth Nyendwa, who appears to be over 60 years old, failed to give her age in the Lusaka Magistrate Court saying she did not know when she was born.

Nyendwa, who appeared before Magistrate Albert Mwaba, is facing one count of trafficking in psychotropic substances namely 12.4 grams of marijuana contrary to section six of the narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances Act chapter 96 of the laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that Nyendwa, on March 10, 2014 did traffic in psychotropic substances namely 12.4 grams of marijuana, a herbal product of cannabis sativa without lawful authority.

And when the magistrate asked her what she intended to do with the drugs that she was found with, she responded that she wanted to use them as a herbal medicine.

The matter has since been adjourned to tomorrow, March 27, 2014 for facts and sentencing and the accused person has remained remanded in custody.
