POLICE have arrested a 45-year-old man of Mansa for allegedly axing another man to death on suspicion that he was cohabiting with his wife.
Luapula Province commissioner of police Malcolm Mulenga confirmed the development in an interview yesterday.
Mr Mulenga identified the suspect as Cleris Sikapizya of Kasompe village, while the deceased has been identified as Collins Chipanta, 20, of Kabuta village in Mansa.
He said the incident happened on Friday last week around 19:00 hours when Sikapizya visited his wife’s residence, identified as Beauty Mwila, and found her chatting with Chipanta.
“We have arrested a 45-year-old man of Kasompe village, who allegedly murdered his rival on suspicion that he was cohabiting with his wife. The two are believed to have been on separation and when the accused visited his wife’s house, he found her chatting with the deceased and this prompted him to get an axe and hit him on the right side of his chest,” Mr Mulenga added.
He said Sikapizya had earlier warned his former wife that he would kill anyone who would be found chatting with her.
Mr Mulenga said the deceased bled profusely from his chest after being hit and died instantly.
He said the body of the deceased is currently lying in the Mansa General Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem and burial.

“Sikapizya has since been charged with murder, contrary to Section 200 Cap 87 of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia, and he will appear in court soon,” Mr Mulenga said.
