Labour and Social Security Minister Fackson Shamenda says a country’s economic growth is meaningless if it does not benefit the majority of the people.

Mr. Shamenda says economic growth should be able to trickle down to the grassroots.

He said this in an interview with ZANIS in Geneva today.

Mr. Shamenda, who is attending the International Labour Conference, also said government needed the necessary support from stakeholders to ensure that issues of youth unemployment are addressed.

He said youth unemployment was a time bomb that needed to be addressed quickly.

The Labour Minister stated that the PF government was making a lot of efforts to create employment for the youths in the country through the various development programmes being implemented.

He said these efforts were not only aimed at the urban youths but also the rural young people.

Mr. Shamenda further stated that the PF government had come up with projects such as the link Zambia 8000 that would create employment for the youths.

The conference, which is tripartite in nature, is being attended by experts from ILO member states, social partners, representatives of regional and labour and employment professional organisations.

Zambia is being represented through this tripartite arrangement by Labour and Social Security Minister Fackson Shamenda, Federation of Employers Executive Director Harrington Chibanda, Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Leonard Hikaumba and Federation of Free Trade Unions in Zambia (FTTUZ) president Joyce Nonde.
