–Government, through the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has embarked on the electrification of some rural areas of Monze district in a bid to spur economic development.

Monze District commissioner, Lucia Mwiinde, says the electrification project is already underway and government is financing the project.

Ms Mwiinde told ZANIS in Monze that areas in Moomba Constituency under chiefs Mwanza and Chona will benefit from the electrification project.

The DC said schools and other public institutions in the project area have been targeted to benefit among others.

She said the electrification project is in line with the Patriotic Front (PF) Government’s promises to electrify rural areas so as to boost economic activities.

Ms Mwiinde said President Michael Sata’s government wants rural areas to have electricity so that people can engage in various economic activities that will contribute positively to the development of the country.

Ms Mwiinde disclosed that the project has also provided employment to the local people as a number of youth have been engaged to undertake bush clearing and other works.

She said the people of Moomba Constituency are happy with the PF government for fulfilling its promise to take electricity to rural areas that had been previously neglected.

In its plan, the Rural Electrification Authority has identified a total of 1,217 Growth Centres in rural areas throughout the country which will be the target for electrification during the period.

The Master Plan targets to increase the electrification rate in rural areas from the current 3 per cent to 51 per cent by the year 2030.
