MINISTER of Sport and Youth Chishimba Kambwili says the successful hosting of the 2013 Confederation of Southern Africa Football Association (Cosafa) Senior Challenge Cup will prove that Zambia would make a good host for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
He said this at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka yesterday where he launched an official countdown to the Cosafa tournament.
Kambwili said Zambia must successfully stage the Cosafa to show that the country has the capacity to organise major sports events.
He also said hosting of competitions like the Cosafa championship has indirect and direct economic benefits to the country.
“The benefits of hosting the championship are immense. They include creating a better image of country, exposure of our footballers, enhancing local management skills, enhancing Zambia’s position as a potential sports tourist destination, inspiration for youths to engage in sports, generating direct and indirect economic activities through employment and revenue for country,” he said.
Kambwili said fans and the corporate will should support the tournament which will run from July 6, 21.
“Let’s all turn up in numbers and prove that we can fill up the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. We also need to give support to all the teams and not just our team,” Kambwili said.
The minister, who donned a full national soccer team attire, later displayed some juggling skills for an official Cosafa advert.
The 2013 Cosafa championship will feature 14 countries: Angola, Botswana, Equatorial Guinea, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi and Mauritius.
Others are Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and hosts Zambia.
Venues for the tournament are Arthur Davies and Nkana in Kitwe, Nkoloma in Lusaka and Levy Mwanawasa in Ndola.
