Riotous man jailed

Katete, April 9, ZANIS ——– A 41 – year- old man of Kapiko village in Chief Kawaza’s area in Katete district has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for riotous behaviour contrary to the laws of Zambia.

Before Magistrate Simushi Mwakoi was Fred Banda who pleaded guilty of riotous behaviour.

Facts before the court were that on April 4th Fred Banda did take part in the riot in protest of the death of Naomi Daka who was brutally murdered.

In mitigation Banda pleaded with the court to exercise lenience on him as he was looking after his two children and his aged mother as well as his grandmother who was blind.

And when passing judgment Magistrate Mwakoi said that the offence that Banda committed was a serious one and attracted a sentence of seven years.

Mr Mwakoi said that taking into consideration that the convict was the first offender and that he did not waste the court’s time by pleading guilty, the court decided to reduce his sentence to 18 months from the day of arrest.

He said that the 141 suspects who pleaded not guilty would appear in court for trial on 22nd April this month

Last week police in Katete arrested 288 people for rioting and looting shops in protest of the killing of Naomi Daka 21.
