44 year old cyclist dies after being hit by vehicle in Nyimba

—————– A 44 year old cyclist has died in a road traffic accident after being hit by a vehicle along great east road in Nyimba district.

 

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Grace Chipalila has confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Chipata today.

 

Ms. Chipalila said the accident occurred on Sunday around 14:00 hours in Nyimba District and the deceased has been identified as Kennedy Sakala of Chief Ndake.

 

She said Sakala was hit by a Toyota land cruiser registration number ALG 8964 which was coming from Lusaka to Chipata and was being driven by Aya Mashonga of Lundazi District who is also an employee of World Vision in Lundazi.

 

Ms. Chipalila said Sakala died on the spot after sustaining head injuries and fractured legs.

 

The body of the deceased is lying in Nyimba district hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem and the driver is detained at Nyimba police station and will appear in court soon for causing death by dangerous driving.

 

Meanwhile, a 20 year old man of Ndalala village in Chief Chikuwe in Chipata district has died after being hit by another man with a hoe handle.

 

The deceased who has been identified as Masauso Nyirenda was hit in the head by Lingilani Banda of the same area on 5th April and was later taken to Mzeyi clinic where he was referred to Chipata general hospital and later died on 7th April, 2013 around 12:00 hours after sustaining head injuries.

 

The body of the deceased is lying in Chipata general hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem and the suspect is on the run and police has since launched a man hunt.

 

The Police Commissioner has also said the situation in Katete is calm and that the police have started door to door inspection in search of goods which were stolen during the riot.

 

Last week Katete residents rioted over the brutal murder of a grade 12 pupil Naomi Daka of Katete Day secondary school in suspected rituals.
