The Zambia Disability HIV/AIDS Human Rights Programme has congratulated Chieftainess Nkomesha Mukamambo 11 of the Soli people of Chongwe district on her election as Chairperson of the House of Chiefs.

Programme Director Elijah Ngwale said Chieftainess Nkomesha has the required attributes and magnanimity to deal with issues affecting traditional leaders in the country.

Meanwhile, Mr Ngwale has appealed to Chieftainess Nkomesha to deal squarely with land issues at the forthcoming national constitution convention to be held.

Mr. Ngwale expressed confidence that the newly elected Chairperson of the House of Chiefs will perform her duties with diligence and professionalism.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka that it was good that for the first time in 47 years of the existence of the House of Chief a female traditional leader will be in charge.

And Mr Ngwale has pointed out that articles 293 to 301 of the first draft constitution which look at land issues should be carefully looked at the national conference on the draft constitution which will be held in Lusaka next month in April.

He noted that under the provisions of articles 293 to 301, a lot of land is being taken away from traditional leaders by the state and thereby leaving chiefs with no authority over land issues.

Mr. Ngwale stressed that the authority of traditional rulers especially on land issues is being eroded saying the situation should be addressed as a matter of urgency.

He said if Zambians are not careful, they risk selling their God given resources such as land to foreigners.

Mr. Ngwale urged Chieftainess Nkomesha to mobilise other traditional leaders to ensure the trend where land is being grabbed from traditional leaders is stopped by voting against the concerned articles.
