ZANIS COPY -Child dies, other sustain fractured leg after pole and house collapsed

—-A pole and mud house collapsed yesterday leaving a child dead while the other one sustained a fractured leg after a heavy rain down pour in Kaoma District of Western Province.

 

Both Kaoma District Commissioner Joster Manjolo and police officer – in- charge Rodgers Chiwila confirmed the incident to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) this morning.

 

Mr Manjolo identified the deceased as Katongo Chipango 7, while Musole Chipango  9, who sustained a fractured left leg, is admitted to Kaoma district hospital.

 

He added that both children are from Saliboyo village in chief Mutondo’s area and that the incident happened around 20:00 hours yesterday after the heavy rains that characterized the district for the past one week.

 

He said the body of  Chipango is lying in Kaoma district hospital mortuary and will be put to rest after a post-mortem is conducted today.

 

In a related development, a 1×3 grade eight class room blocks at Longe Basic School collapsed leaving over 50 pupils with nowhere to learn from.

 

Mr. Manjolo complained that if the rains continued for the next one week a lot of lives would be lost as most of the structures have out lived there usefulness in the district.

 

The DC has since appealed to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) in the Office of the Vice President to urgently send some tents to Longe Basic School so that pupils resume their classes.  

 

Mr. Manjolo said that a 1×3 class room block at Lui Basic School was also ripped off by strong rain winds leaving a class teacher dead. He identified the teacher as Prisca Matakala, 32.

 

He has however, requested people in the communities in the district to ensure that they construct strong houses as the prevailing weather patterns in the country are unpredictable.
