Government says it will continue to put in place measures to ensure that  crops produced by small scale farmers are bought by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).

Speaking on behalf of Lukulu District Commissioner Precious Muyenga during the official launch of the FRA offices in Lukulu district, Mitete District Administration Officer Evans Kawilila said the aim was to procure inputs for farmers for the coming season.

Mr. Kawilila said this will be done to improve agricultural inputs by farmers through the Fertilizer Support Programme.

He said the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock has put in place measures to ensure transparent allocation and timely distribution of this year’s FSP inputs to all the eligible farmer groups in the district.

The DAO also said the FRA purchasing exercise for the 2013 marketing season will run from 10th June to the end of October  in Lukulu and Mitete districts.

He named the two crops that will be bought by the FRA as rice and maize at K70 per 50 kg bag K60 per 40 kg bag  of rice respectively.

Mr. Kawilila mentioned that the agency will only operate in eight depots which include Kamilende, Kaluwawa, Simakumba and Kasombo among others .

Others are Lishuwa Mankwanda, Dongwe and Lutembwe.

Mr Kawilila further urged the farmers to avoid private buyers who are persuading them to buy at very low prices.
