The reason Katlego Mphela has not travelled with the squad to Zambia is because they don’t know his whereabouts, Mamelodi Sundowns spokesperson Thulani Thuswa said on Friday.

The team in Zambia for a mid-season camp that will see them play three fixtures against local sides.

Mphela will leave the club at the end of the season after signing a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs.

“To be honest with you, we haven’t left Mphela behind because we don’t know where he is. We haven’t seen him for two days. He was in our plan to come to Zambia just like any other player,” Thuswa said.

He also admitted that it is likely that Mphela will leave the club during this transfer window.

“It’s a high possibility. I think it will work better that way now because they would want to use him or see him. We can’t plan going forward with a player who’s going to leave us in six month,” added Thuswa.

Mphela’s business manager Glyn Birkin says he is not certain where the player is or why he didn’t turn up for training.

“I’m not quite sure what the situation is. Sundowns has not contacted me to let me know about the situation.

“I don’t think it’s right of the player because he’s still contracted to the club until June and he needs to honour that obligation,” Birkin said.

He also confirmed that Chiefs wanted the player released during this transfer window.

Birkin says it is now up to Sundowns to decide what happens.

“I’m hopeful that they will agree to release him earlier and I know that Kaizer Chiefs are already engaging him in discussions in that respect. But obviously, the player being away from training doesn’t help the situation.”

The club also confirmed that Richard Henyekane and Raymond Monama have joined Free State Stars and AmaTuks on loan respectively.
