The reopening of the defunct Mulungushi Textiles mill in Zambia may take some more time, Vice President Inonge Wina told the Zambian Parliament, the Zambian National Broadcasting Corporation said.

Wina said the delay in opening the textiles mill in Kabwe is due to massive vandalism at the plant.

In last July, the Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles (ZCMT) joint venture signed a 12-year lease agreement with Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Limited (METL) to revive the operations of the defunct textile mill.

Wina said the investor is still mobilising resource to revamp the textile mill which last operated on 30 June 2007, and hoped that the factory will soon become operational.

METL is planning to invest US$ 10 million in reviving the operations at the textile mill, which is to be renamed Mohammed Enterprises Mulungushi Textiles.

Once operational, the textile mill is expected to create 2,000 employment opportunities. (RKS)
