Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says the fight for freedom is still alive and Zambians cannot afford to be complacent.

Mr. Hichilema says destructive, violent and persecutory actions now threaten the most precious of the Zambian people’s inheritances.

In his African Freedom Day message Mr. Hichilema has observed that the current environment of intimidation and provocation, being seen in the ongoing political campaigns does not look like freedom.

Mr. Hichilema notes that this is irrespective of one’s political affiliation.

He states that the arrest of opposition political leaders for long periods before establishing the charges and receiving the complainants is not freedom.

Mr. Hichilema says this is especially when PF supporters and officers caught on camera committing criminal acts remain un-pursued.

He says this is besides the political pressure on the state broadcasters, attacks on journalists, cancelled opposition media appearances and heavy handed application of the Public Order Act.

Mr. Hichilema is of the view that all this mean that today in Zambia freedom of expression is under threat contrary the vision African Union (AU) had in mind when it was created.
