A PF supporter died on the spot while several others sustained serious injuries in Kapiri Mposhi on Saturday night after the bus they were in careered off the road.

Central Province police commissioner Lombe Kamukoshi confirmed the accident in a statement yesterday.

She explained that the accident happened around 20:30 hours at Kabowa area, about seven kilometres from Kapiri Mposhi Police Station.

“[It] involved male Simon Mwape, aged 46, of Twapya township in Ndola, driving Marcopolo PSV bus registration number ABH 8577 from Lusaka to Copperbelt with 78 passengers on board,” Kamukoshi stated. “[The driver] lost control of the moving vehicle due to excessive speed, hence went to the extreme left side of the road and the bus fell on its left side…A passenger, male Frederick Mutupa, aged 20, of Lubuto area in Ndola died on the spot due to body injuries [and his] body is in Kapiri Mposhi district hospital mortuary, whereas the bus driver and other passengers sustained various injuries and are currently admitted to Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital.”

And Central Province minister Davies Chisopa expressed sadness at the loss of life and implored motorists to be cautious and adhere to traffic rules.

“I also wish to confirm that all those who were rushed to the hospital have been declared to be in a stable condition and some have since been discharged. But both the bus and the other vehicle are extensively damaged, but unfortunately, the driver of the other vehicle, which was carrying some UPND supporters is on the run and police have not taken any statement from him yet. But Zambia Police officers have instituted a manhunt for him,” said Chisopa.
