A KABWE mother and her 23-year-old son have been fined K5,000 each, or in default, nine months imprisonment for illegally diverting electricity from a Zesco prepaid meter to avoid paying for power.
Kabwe principal resident magistrate John Mbuzi, fined Elvis Munyuni and Benita Mwinga both of Bwacha Township after they pleaded guilty to interfering with Zesco apparatus.
Between July 11, 2012 and November 25, this year, the duo fraudulently diverted electrical power from a prepaid meter to their house. Their scheme was discovered when a senior Zesco officer, Mateba Kateba, was carrying out inspections in Bwacha Township on November 5, this year.
Munyuni told the court that he personally tampered with the prepaid meter to help his mother access power. He said he was remorseful for his actions.
