Education minister Michael Kaingu has appointed a ten member interim committee to preside over the affairs of the University of Zambia until a substantive university council is put in place.

 

Dr. Kaingu says the mandate of the University Council at the University of Zambiacame to an end in April this year.

 

He says the appointment of the caretaker committed is in accordance with the Higher Education Act Number four of 2013.

 

The caretaker committee’s mandate includes searching for a new Vice Chancellor following the resignation of Professor Stephen Simukanga about a month.

 

Dr Kaingu announced this at a media briefing in Lusaka on Thursday.

 

And Dr Kaingu said government is making efforts to address challenges that the University of Zambia has been facing since 2013.

 

He pointed out that One Hundred and Fifty million Kwacha   was released to pay arrears up to 2010, before the PF came into power.

 

Dr Kaingu stated that the interim committee will work closely with Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda on the payment of outstanding arrears to lecturers.
