Gravel pit collapses, kills one

A 32 year old man of Nsensema village in Mwansabombwe district has died after he fell in a gravel pit.

The gravel pit belongs to Swadcom Trading Limited a company constructing Mwansabombwe Civic Centre where the deceased was employed.

The deceased together with six of his workmates were digging gravel when he met his fate.

Disclosing the incident to ZANIS in Mansa, Luapula Province Police Commissioner Hudson Namachila the incident occurred on Friday July 31, around 12:45 hours and named the deceased as Betwell Musonda of Mwata Kazembe’s Chiefdom.

Mr. Namachila explained that the gravel fell on Musonda and buried the pit.

Mr Namachila revealed that when Musonda’s workmates excavated the gravel using shovels, Musonda had already died and was rushed to Mbereshi Mission Hospital.

Meanwhile, a 34 year old man of Kanengo Secondary School in Kawambwa district died on the spot after the vehicle he travelling in overturned.

Mr. Namachila said Oddis Simwinji died when the Toyota Noah registration number ACT 4881 which was being driven by William Kalunga 46 also of Kanengo Secondary School lost control of the vehicle and overturned several times due to excessive speed.

He said this happened on August 1, around 01:00 hours at Nachampama village in Chief Mushota’s Chiefdom along Kawambwa-Luwingu road.

Mr. Namachila said Kalunga sustained a fractured arm and had bruises and the vehicle extensively damaged.
