TWO housemates of Ndola’s Chifubu have each been sentenced to eight months simple imprisonment by the Ndola Magistrate’s Court for stealing five pairs of shoes and seven pairs of socks from Jet Stores in Ndola.

The sentences were, however, suspended for 12 months.
Magistrate Emmanuel Malenga, on Tuesday, convicted Bwalya Chilando, 19, and Queen Mwaba, 26, both of house number CHT 2383 in Chifubu after they pleaded guilty to theft.

“I have heard the facts and am satisfied that they disclose the offence charged. Based on your own admission of the offence, I find you guilty as charged and I accordingly convict you. I sentence each of you to eight month simple imprisonment with effect from the date you were arrested.
“However, I suspend the sentence for 12 months within which you must not commit a similar offence,” Mr Malenga said.

In admitting the charge, the accused told Mr Malenga that they stole the socks and shoes for their personal use.
Particulars of the offence are that on June 19, in Ndola, the two stole five pairs of shoes and seven pairs of socks, altogether valued at K599.19, from Jet Stores.

And in mitigation, Chilando and Mwaba pleaded with the court for leniency, stating that they were remorseful of their actions and promised never to commit a similar offence.
Facts read in court were that on the material day, around 13:00 hours, the accused went to the store and stole the items and hid them under the clothes they were wearing.

But as they walked out of the store, the censor at the exit went off, and the duo were apprehended by the security guard. The two suspects were then taken back into the stored and upon being searched were found with socks and shoes.

The court also heard that the duo was taken to Ndola Central Police Station where they admitted having stolen the items.
