LUNGU re-opens Collumn Mine

President Edgar Lungu is in Sinazongwe district, Southern Province, to officially re-open the Collumn Coal Mine which was closed two years ago.

President Lungu’s Presidential helicopter touched down at Mkandabwe School grounds at 13:15 Hours.

He is expected to return to Lusaka after the exercise.

Mr. Lungu was received by Southern Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu, Transport Deputy Minister Richwell Siamunene, Collumn Coal Mine Board Chairman Suzyo Nyika, Government and PF officials.

ZNBC’s Bangwe Naviley reports from Sinazongwe that about 40 Million US Dollars will be injected into the mine to revamp it over a period of 4 years.

At least 1 thousand jobs are expected to be created from the current 600.

The only underground coal mine in Zambia is expected to increase production from the current 12 thousand to 40 thousand tonnes per month.

Government closed the mine for contravention of statutory requirements in the year 2012.
