A civic leader in Nchelenge District of Luapula Province has appealed to the government to put contingent measures in place to avert looming hunger at Chisenga Island on Mweru Lake.

Chisenga ward councillor Davies Chitondo said according to unverified reports severe hunger is looming at the Island of Chisenga because of the total crop failure during the 2014/2015 farming season.

Mr. Chitondo said unless government through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) puts up remedial measures, the over 16,000 people living on the Island will be stalked with hunger to starvation.

He said rain fed maize totally failed because of the prolonged dry spells the area experienced this farming season and appealed to the government for food relief to avoid the imminent hunger.

Mr. Chitondo who is also the deputy chairperson for the Nchelenge District Council made the appeal in a walk-in interview with ZANIS in the area the morning of March 27th.
He complained that the cassava crop which is drought resistant and a fall back in case of hunger had also underperformed in the last 10 years compounding the hunger situation in the area.

Mr. Chitondo revealed that he had informed the Nchelenge District administration in writing and copied the letter to the District Agricultural Coordinator (DACO) about the looming hunger.
