ZESCO employee, youth, electrocuted

—A ZESCO employee of Monze district has
died on the spot after he was electrocuted while working on a
transformer along the Monze-Livingstone power lines.

 

In a similar incident, a student at Mukwela Youth Resource Centre in Kalomo has
also died on the spot after being electrocuted when he stepped in a
pool of water where a ZESCO pylon had fallen in.

In the Monze case, ZANIS reports that Kelvin Sitamu, 41, a ZESCO lines man of Monze site and service
township met his fate yesterday around 09:20 hours.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda confirmed the
incident to journalists in an interview in Choma yesterday.

Ms Chikwanda explained that the matter was reported to police by Monze
ZESCO area Manager Clement Kuyela .

She said the deceased who was accompanied by his colleagues was
installing a ZESCO transformer on the East side of Manungu township at
the newly constructed housing units.

She explained that police rushed to the scene and managed to retrieve
the body which was allegedly found hanging on the live cable wires.

Ms Chikwanda explained that power had to be disconnected to enable the officers
retrieve the body which is now lying in Monze mission hospital mortuary
awaiting a post-mortem.

She said although people had specialization on work it was significant
to always take precautionary measures on duty to avoid accidents.

Meanwhile, Ms Chikwanda also confirmed that a student at Mukwela Youth Resource Centre in Kalomo has
also died on the spot after being electrocuted when he stepped in a
pool of water where a ZESCO pylon had fallen in.

Ms Chikwanda identified the deceased as Passmore Siachinji, 22, who was electrocuted on Sunday night around 20:00 hours when he walked through a pool of water were live cables from a
ZESCO pole collapsed due to heavy rains.

Ms Chikwanda said the matter was reported to police by Mukwela Youth
Resource Centre manager Sylvester Singani and police rushed to the
scene were the body was picked and is now lying in Kalomo General
Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
