The British Government has congratulated Zambia’s sixth President Edgar Lungu on his election.

British High Commissioner to Zambia James Thornton in a statement made available to QFM News says the British Government will work with him and his government for the further development of Zambia.

Mr Thornton has also offered his commiserations to the losers, and in particular UPND president Hakainde Hichilema and his supporters.

He notes that it is hard to come close yet not win an election.

Mr Thornton has commended Mr Hichilema for calling on his supporters to remain calm and avoid violence.

The British High Commission has however observed that the just ended tight election has made Zambia seem a little more divided than before.

Mr Thornton says it is his hope that both Mr Lungu and Mr Hichilema can work to create unity and reconciliation.

And Mr Thornton has commended Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson Irene Mambilima for overseeing what he has described as a transparent election.

He says Justice Mambilima has demonstrated that she is a lady of unimpeachable integrity.

Mr Thornton states that the ECZ needs to be congratulated for organising the election at short notice.
