Solwezi records 308 GBV cases

Solwezi,  26 November, 2014, ZANIS………Northwestern province permanent secretary Amos Malupenga has expressed concern at the high number of Gender Based Violence cases being recorded at the Young Women’s Christian Association one stop Centre in Solwezi.

Mr Malupenga says despite concerted efforts from various stakeholders aimed at stemming GBV in the district, the figures of those that suffer as a result of the scourge have shown no sign of reducing.

The Permanent Secretary said the 308 cases of GBV that were recorded this year compared to the previous 172 was an indication of the rampant and wide spread nature of the problem considering the fact that some cases go unreported.

Mr Malupenga said this when he officially launched the 16 days of activism against GBV in Solwezi yesterday.

The Permanent Secretary has since called for a comprehensive and sustained community response programme targeted at grassroots level in order to effectively address the problem.

Meanwhile, YWCA in Solwezi has praised Kansanshi mine for its active role in financing GBV programmes at both district and provincial level.

YWCA regional Coordinator, Chileshe Mwape, thanked the mining firm for financing the production of a television documentary that will be used a sensitization tool against GBV.
