Seventeen pupils out of the 53 that were enrolled to write the 2014 grade nine examinations at Lukalanya Basic School in Mongu dropped out due to early marriages and falling pregnant.

ZANIS reports that school Head Teacher Brian Wasamunu explained that some  of the pupils dropped out of because they opted to seek for casual jobs.

This came to light when Western Province Accounts Officer Phaides Kalangwa paid a courtesy call on the school Head teacher Brian Wasamunu.

Mr. Wasamunu added that despite the implementation of the re-entry policy by government which the school was advocating for pupils still find it difficult to go back to school once they drop out a situation  he described as unfortunate.

He pointed out that there is need for  girl children to utilize the education facilities that government has put in place adding that even while being married they could still go back to school for the betterment of their livelihood.

Meanwhile,  Provincial Accounts Officer Phaides Kalangwa pointed out the need to bring a boy child on board in advocating for the re-entry policy as they are the root cause of girls dropping out of school.

She stressed that people were only considering the symptoms and not the root cause of the girl child dropping-out of school due to early pregnancies.
