Use of toilets vital-govt
Chilanga, Nov 25, 2014, ZANIS………… Chilanga District Administrative officer Frazer Musonda has called on parents in the area to teach their children to use universal toilets when answering the call of nature .
He said children should be encouraged to use toilets as opposed to using nearby bushes.
Speaking during the world toilet day celebrations yesterday whose theme was “Equity and Dignity” in Namalombwe ward, Mr. Musonda said parents and guardians should promote a culture of building proper toilets to safe guard the lives of women and children.
He said building proper toilets will help reduce high cases of rape and defilements in communities.
Mr Musonda further noted that open defecation infringes on human safety and dignity especially for women and girls who lose privacy and face shame having to defecate in nearby bushes due to lack of toilets.
Mr. Musonda added that provision of universal toilets will also reduce violence against women.
And Chilanga District Council Secretary Hilda Silungwe in a speech read on her behalf by Chilanga District Planning Officer Muchimba Muvombo said there is need to empower the local communities to stop open defecation through building and use of latrines.
She said adhering to basic sanitation rules will help to reduce cases of water borne disease such diarrhoea and cholera.
