2014 Zambia Squash Open tournament takes off

 

Lusaka, November 21st, 2014, ZANIS–The K60, 000 prize money worth 2014 Zambia Squash Open tournament kicked off this morning at the Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka.

 

 

The tournament which ends on Sunday has attracted over 34 players from, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi and the hosts Zambia.

 

 

Officiating during the opening ceremony in Lusaka last night, National Sport Council of Zambia (NSCZ) Board Member Smart Mwitwa praised the corporate world for sponsoring this year’s tournament.

 

 

Mwitwa said the overwhelming corporate support is slowly positioning the country to host major regional and continental squash championship.

 

 

Among the sponsors of this year’s tournament are Shreej Investment, Finance Bank, Zambeef, Pamodzi hotel, ZAMEFA and among others.

 

 

World Squash Federation (WSF) certified referee from Zimbabwe Lucky Mlilo will be the tournament referee.

 

 

Reigning squash national champion Manda Chilambwe is among the top players competing at this year’s championship.

 

 

Other notable players competing include Kelvin Ndhlovu, Sharon Chimfwembe, Monica Chimese and Mwinga Lengwe.

 

 

Meanwhile, the World Squash Federation (WSF) has written to Zambia to consider hosting the 2017 Africa Junior Squash championship.

 

 

Zambia Squash Association (ZSA) President Norena Chiteba said the decision was arrived at during the just ended Africa Squash Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Namibia.

 

 

Chiteba said her association is doing everything possible to successfully host the tournament and will write to the world squash governing body once all logistics are put in place.

 

 

This will be the first time that Zambia will be hosting a major international tournament in the history of squash in the country.
