Ex-prisoners have joined the rest of the country in mourning the late President Michael Sata.

Prisoner Reintegration and Empowerment Organization chairperson Derrick Malumo said the inmates have lost a friend who was determined to improve their living conditions.

Mr. Malumo recalled that President Sata recently pardoned 975 prisoners in exercising the powers that were vested in him by Article 59 of the constitution of Zambia which empowers the republican President to exercise prerogative of mercy.

He said it was during late President’s reign that the construction and rehabilitation of prisons was done.

He said this clearly showed that President Sata had a heart to better the living conditions of prisoners.

Mr. Malumo cited Mwembeshi maximum-B as one prison that was completed leading to 600 prisoners being moved from Mukobeko maximum prison to the newly built Mwembeshi prisons.

He also revealed that under President Sata’s leadership, the Kalonga milling plant was established to help prisoners produce their own mealie-meal.

Mr. Malumo expressed hope that the person to that will take over the late President Sata’s mantle will continue with the good foundation of works that the deceased leader has left behind.

President Michael Sata died on October 28 in London where he was receiving medical treatment.
