Mkushi leaders condemn foetus dumping

Mkushi, April 15, 2014, ZANIS—Civic and traditional leaders in Mkushi district have expressed shock at the recent discovery of a dumped foetus in Kasansama area of Chitina chiefdom.

Headman Alick Chiwaya of Chiwaya village told ZANIS that the discovery of a foetus at a nearby bush in his village had attracted outrage from the residents.

Headman Chiwaya explained that residents had found the foetus wrapped in a piece of chitenge and plastic material two days ago and immediately reported the matter to the Police.

The incident has also attracted the attention of the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) Coordinator Hilda Makanta, who described the practice of foetus dumping as inhuman.

Mrs. Makanta charged that incidences of foetus dumping are believed to be linked to illegal abortions as a result of premarital sex.

She said that there was need for parents and Faith Based Organisations to work closely in efforts aimed at discouraging premarital sex, saying that the practice led to unwanted pregnancies resulting in illegal abortions and dumping of foetus.

She stressed that there was need for Parents to acknowledge that they had an obligation to ensure that they teach  good morals when raising their Children.

Mrs. Makanta observed that the practice of illegal abortions as foetus dumping involved the termination of a life, saying that it was saddening that people could commit such acts.

Although no suspects have been identified in the incident so far, Police in the District are making frantic efforts to arrest the culprit.
