Suspected fish disease breaks out in Lunga district in Luapula Province

Lunga, September 12, 2014,ZANIS—Samfya District Fisheries Research Officer  Ngosa Chipinda has advised the people of Lunga District not to worry about the suspected fish disease in Lunga District in Luapula Province as experts will look into the matter.

Mrs Chipinda said people in the district should not be worried as experts from Samfya Fisheries Department will be travelling to Lunga District to take some samples of the fish and the water.

Speaking to ZANIS in an interview in Samfya, Mrs Chipinda said the fish disease were the fish is prone to suffer from blisters and sores is not happening for the first time.

She disclosed similar cases were reported in Eastern Province some years back.

The fisheries Officer said according to reports from other places where the fish disease has been reported like Chikuni village in Mpika District in Muchinga Province, it was discovered after laboratory tests from University of Zambia that the disease was usually caused by the Ph water body’s conditions.

Mrs Chipinda identified the disease as Epizootic ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) and advised the people of Lunga to dry and boil the fish properly before eating saying that the disease is not fatal to human beings and can be treated by putting lime into the water.
