Barclays unveils K2 million soccer cup tourney

The K2 million rich seventh edition of the Barclays cup tournament kicks off this weekend with eight teams aiming to grab the top prize money.

 

On Saturday, Nkoloma stadium in Lusaka hosts a double header quarter finals with Mufulira Wanderers taking on ZESCO United in the first game while Lusaka dynamos take on NAPSA Stars in the second game.

 

And on Sunday at the same venue, ZANACO takes on Konkola Blades while Power Dynamos takes on their bitter town mate rivals Nkana in the second game.

 

Meanwhile, Barclays Bank Managing Director Saviour Chibiya said his bank has a natural affinity for sport.

 

This is seventh year the bank is sponsoring the biggest cup tournament in the country.

 

Chibiya said as Zambia celebrates its 50th independence anniversary, the Barclays tournament is among the competitions that has added value to the soccer history of the country and as unifying a factor.

 

He was speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today.

 

Chibiya explained that this year’s winners will get K250, 000 while runners up will get K150, 000 with the coach and the player of the tournament getting K10, 000 and K5, 000 respectively.

 

At the same briefing, Supersport Southern Africa Marketing Manager Marlon Kananda disclosed that all the Barclays cup matches will be televised live on Supersport.

 

Earlier, Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Executive Committee member Lee Kawanu urged soccer fans to turn out in big number and support their teams during the tournament.
